SPARKS GREENBRAE LIONS, SPANISH SPRINGS LIONS, RACHEL LIONS MEMBERS and SPARKS SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER members helped with the USS NIMITZ package packing morning on Monday Sept. 21, 2009.

The young sailors are going to enjoy some magazines, crackerjacks, cookies, candy, sunflower seeds, nuts, beef jerky, jellybeans, Gatorade powder, potato chips, licorice, etc... All donated by the citizens of Reno and Sparks - some of the most generous citizens in the country!

IPDG Hugh Lantz and President Suraj Zutshi can barely see over the 60+ packages that are being sent to the young men and women on board the USS Nimitz. A project between Sparks Greenbrae Lions and the Sparks Senior Citizens Center.

Letters From Some Happy Nimitz Sailors

To the members of the Lions Club,
I would like to personally thank everyone for all the support that has been given to us.  It is no easy task to leave family and loved ones for any given amount of time, but in the 'grand scheme' of things, we are here doing our best in order to fight the good fight. On a ship, hearing words "mail call" is almost like winning the lottery, and this last one in particular we have indeed been spoiled. Your efforts are more than appreciated, and OI Division is so fortunate to have your support. Thank you for everything.

C. H.

Dear Lions Club Members and Grandma and Grandpa,
I would like to thank you all personally for all the wonderful gifts you have taken the time to prepare and send to us all.  We really appreciate everything you all are doing back at home. Being out to sea and working around the clock really takes a toll on all of us, and it is really uplifting to know what we do is appreciated. Not only did you boost our spirits up, but you put a smile, ear-to-ear on people who don't even smile and that's fantastic!

We were really excited and happy to even get something especially from people we don't even know. I can't believe a group of people I've never met has done this for me. It makes me feel good and proud to serve our country because it makes me feel like I am doing something good for the American people. Although we don't know each other personally, we do share the common ground of being Americans, and although I am out her serving you and our country, you are my real 'heroes'. It's people like you that make me proud to be in the United States Navy. I'm proud to serve you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Z.S.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lantz,
I want to thank you so much for the care packages that you sent to the ship. I can tell you that the Sailors are very appreciative that you spent your personal time, effort and money to send such thoughtful gifts to us out here. I was present when some of the packages were delivered and when they were opened, everyone had the biggest smiles and could not believe you all did this for us. On behalf of them, I pass along their heartfelt thanks.

Again, thank you for your generosity and support. We come to expect it from our families, but when it comes out of the blue like the care packages you sent, it is a very welcome surprise. It helps when we know that we have the support of folks like you. Thank you!

C.C.B

Thank you,
In the last 20 years of service in the Navy, my family never sent me anything that I had not asked for first. I was very touched by the generosity of The Lions Club to send us all a small token of appreciation. Thank you so much for the care package and the love involved in the effort it took to make it worthwhile.

W.
